Buying Furniture: Why Specialist Retailers Are Often the Better Choice

Buying furniture is about more than price. Why expert advice, specialist retailers and a clear interior design plan often lead to better long-term decisions. A plea for more conscious choices.

Buying furniture can seem simple at first: you see a sofa, a dining table, a bed or a kitchen, compare prices, wait for a special offer - and then choose what looks like the best deal.

But is the lowest price really always the best offer?

This is a question I have been thinking about for a long time. And a recent report by the Swiss consumer programme SRF Kassensturz about a large furniture group confirmed something I often see in my work: when buying furniture, it is about much more than just the price.

It is about advice.

About quality.About service.

About responsibility.

And about making decisions that truly fit your home, your everyday life and the way you want to live.

This is not about criticising one company or one specific type of retailer. The furniture industry is complex. Supply chains are complex. And yes, things can go wrong even when working with specialist retailers.

But that is exactly why the most important question is not only:

How much does this piece of furniture cost?

It is also:

Who is advising me? Who is thinking along with me? And who takes responsibility if something does not work out as planned?

Buying furniture is more than a price decision

Furniture, kitchens, beds and sofas are often significant investments. So it is completely understandable that many people look for discounts, special offers and attractive prices.

The problem is: a discount does not tell you whether a piece of furniture truly fits your home, your lifestyle and your needs.

A sofa may look affordable at first glance - but if it loses its shape after a short time, does not suit the proportions of the room or turns delivery into a stressful experience, it may not have been such a good deal after all.

A kitchen may be advertised with a large discount - but if planning, installation, communication and after-sales service do not work well, it can quickly cost far more energy, time and nerves than expected.

That is why I often tell my clients:

A good purchase does not start with the price. It starts with a good plan.

Strongly advertised special offers are often entry points

Another important point when buying furniture: strongly advertised special offers are often entry points - just as we know from many other industries.

From my experience in the furniture industry, I know that certain models, versions or configurations are often produced or purchased in large quantities for major promotions.

This makes the advertised price possible - but it does not automatically mean that this exact version is the best solution for your own home.

Maybe the size is not quite right. Maybe another fabric would make more sense for your everyday life. Maybe a better upholstery, a different table length, another finish or a more suitable configuration would be the better choice.

And very often, you end up with a version that fits better - but also costs more than the advertised starting price.

That is not a problem in itself. The problem begins when you feel pressured by the promotional price and stop asking what you actually need.

Because the real question is not:

How cheap is this offer?

The real question is:

Is this truly the right solution for me, my space and my everyday life?

A good piece of furniture is not simply the cheapest one.

It is the one that fits your home, your lifestyle and the way you want to live.

Why specialist furniture retailers can make a real difference

Specialist retailers offer a kind of value that is often not visible in a simple price comparison.

They know their products. They understand which fabrics work for families, which mattress supports which sleep habits, which dining table size makes sense in everyday life or what truly matters when planning a kitchen for the long term.

Good specialist retailers do not simply sell furniture.

They advise. They listen. They ask questions. They think ahead.

And that makes a difference.

Furniture is not just placed somewhere in a room. It is used, touched, moved, cleaned, loved and lived with. It has to suit people. It has to suit the room. It has to suit the budget. And it has to suit real life.

A good piece of furniture is not just beautiful.

It works.

Especially with kitchens, it is worth speaking to a specialist

One area where I often find myself asking this question is the kitchen.

Many people automatically go to large furniture stores or DIY stores when planning a new kitchen. That is understandable: a kitchen is a major investment, and budget naturally plays an important role.

Still, I believe it is almost always worth speaking to a kitchen studio, a kitchen specialist or a carpenter as well.

Many specialist businesses also offer solutions in an entry-level price segment - often combined with more personal planning and a closer look at everyday life, ergonomics, storage, materials and implementation.

A kitchen is not just about fronts, appliances and worktops.

It is about workflows, storage, connections, lighting, materials, appliances, maintenance, installation and many small details you will feel every single day.

And if the kitchen is part of a renovation, there are usually even more layers to consider. Walls may not be perfectly straight. Connections may need to be adapted. Delivery dates can shift. Questions may come up on site that were not visible on paper.

This is exactly where the value of specialist retailers, kitchen experts and carpenters often becomes very clear.

Not because unexpected things never happen with them. But because experienced professionals are often closer to the project, think along with you, look for solutions and remain available throughout the process.

A kitchen should not simply look good.

It has to function.

Every day.

For many years.

Maybe, in the end, a large furniture store will still be the right solution for your project. But before you decide, it is worth asking yourself:

Have I also spoken to a specialist?

Especially when it comes to a kitchen that will be used daily and should last for many years, this comparison can be incredibly valuable.

Buying cheap can become expensive

I understand very well that not everyone has a large budget for furniture and interiors. I do not have an unlimited budget either.

And I definitely do not believe that everything always has to be expensive.

But I do believe that “cheap” and “conscious” are not the same thing.

Sometimes it makes more sense to buy less - but buy better.

A good dining table that brings joy for many years can be a better decision than a quick solution that needs to be replaced after a short time.

A well-chosen sofa, planned in stages, can be more valuable than a rushed purchase that does not fit the space or your life.

And investing in advice and planning first can often help you avoid expensive mistakes later.

A home does not need to be created in one weekend. And it does not need to be perfect immediately.

But it should move in the right direction.

Buying furniture in stages is an underrated luxury

For me, this is one of the most important points when creating a home:

You do not have to buy everything at once.

Especially when the budget is limited, a step-by-step plan can make much more sense than trying to furnish everything quickly.

A good interior design plan shows you what has priority. What can wait. Where it is worth investing. And where a simpler solution is completely fine.

Maybe you buy the sofa first because you use it every day.

Maybe the perfect rug can wait a few more months.

Maybe an existing piece of furniture stays for now and is replaced later.

Maybe you invest in good lighting because it changes the entire feeling of the room.

This allows your home to grow - while still having a clear direction.

And very often, this is far more sustainable, thoughtful and personal than buying everything at once without a concept.

Price wars do not only damage the market

Of course, discounts are tempting. We all enjoy getting something at a good price.

But when furniture is sold almost entirely through discounts, it changes the whole market.

Advice loses value.

Service becomes secondary.

Quality comes under pressure.

Expertise becomes invisible.

And in the end, customers start expecting everything to be as cheap as possible, as fast as possible and still perfect.

That cannot work in the long run.

Good specialist retail needs fair prices. Good advice takes time. Good quality needs people who take responsibility.

And yes: you can absolutely ask about the price in a specialist store. I think that is completely legitimate - as long as it is done respectfully and at eye level. Whether a retailer can or wants to offer a discount is their decision. And that also deserves respect.

Because behind specialist shops are people. Family businesses. Teams. Experts. People who open their doors every morning, advise their clients, solve problems, coordinate deliveries and stand behind their work with their name.

My plea: go back to specialists

I would love for us to look more consciously at the way we buy furniture.

Not only at the price.

But at the advice.

At the service.

At the quality.

At the people behind it.

This does not only apply to furniture. It applies to kitchens, beds, lighting, curtains, carpentry, craftsmanship - basically everything that shapes our home.

In my projects, I intentionally work with specialist partners, showrooms, manufacturers and craftspeople whom I know or have carefully got to know over the years.

Not because the most expensive solution is always the best. But because I know how valuable good advice can be.

And because I want my clients to do more than simply buy furniture.

I want them to make decisions that fit who they are, how they live and what they want their home to feel like.

Buying furniture with a plan instead of pressure

If you are currently buying furniture, take a moment before you let yourself be pressured by sales, discounts or limited-time offers.

Ask yourself:

Does this piece really fit my space?

Does it fit my everyday life?

Is it the right size?

Is the material practical for me?

Who is advising me?

Who will deliver and install it?

What happens if something is not right?

And: am I buying from clarity - or from pressure?

Your home is too important to be furnished only according to discount logic.

It can be beautiful. It can be practical. It can be high-quality. It can grow over time. And it should feel like you.

Or as I like to say at Localia Interiors:

Make your home a love letter to yourself.

And sometimes, this love letter starts with a very simple decision:

Do not buy faster.

Buy more consciously.
